The chemicals in the smoke can be detrimental in plants as well as humans. External ethylene gas, for example, often results in flower and flower bud blasting (dropping) as well as leaf yellowing and leaf drop. Tar can build up on the leaves , blocking the stomata and the plants can no longer breathe.

Please consider purchasing smokeless ashtrays and perhaps a few good air filtering machines.

I imagine smokers will post the opposite response, so please ask yourself this question when deciding. Does anything benefit from smoking? (other than the tobacco companies and their stockholders?)

Orchids are so beautiful – they deserve every consideration. Treat them with respect and they will reward you fully.

There may be a risk of tobacco mosaic virus.

Be sure to provide plenty of fresh air movement and ventilation.

If you are a smoker, do not handle plants without first washing your hands.
